After college, I moved to SF in 1970 and quickly got a job at the Haight Ashbury Detox Clinic and went on to receive a Masters in Clinical Psychology.
I "came out," ran two LGBT mental health agencies and along the way, met Harvey Milk who re-inspired me to pursue a political career.
I became chair of the San Francisco democratic party in the 80's, and also served for 20 years as a democratic nation committee woman.
From 1990 to 2010 I served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the California State Assembly, a State Constitutional Officer, State Senator, and a State Labor Commissioner and Agricultural Commissioner.
I was proud to have authored national precedent setting legislation, including the Clean Water Act, the Safe Needle Act, HIV rapid testing and treatment programs, anti-predatory lending legislation, Safe Cosmetic Act, and bills that granted greater supervision, resources and job training for foster children.
The body of work I'm most proud is the creation of domestic partnerships and attendant legal and social benefits that began in 1999. These statutes were the strongest in the nation and paved the way for the recent U.S. Supreme Court victory, affirming the right of same sex couple to marry.
I am a member of the San Francisco Democratic Party, a Political Consultant, particularly invested in helping women run for office, and people who were part of my political team. This past Fall, my former chief of staff was elected to be State Controller and I had victors in the State Senate, City Council and School Boards.
I was glad to have two different mini-reunions with 10 of my closest RHS friends. Surprisingly, there were more boys than girls. We did a lot of hanging out, having unsupervised parties, and playing Beatles records backwards. Sometimes on Saturdays, we girls to Jann's for Sundays - that was WAY before anybody worried about calories.
